2016
2 Classrooms in Nicargua
Matagalpa, Nicaragua
ODFL student travelers helped construct 2 classrooms at the 15th Septiembre School in Matagalpa. This brings to 8 the number of classrooms ODFL has built in Nicaragua. Next year, every high school in Oregon will do an ODFL fundraiser to make this a Nicaraguan “Model School.”
Birthing Centers
Mulpani, Kasteem, and Kot, Nepal
We have built 7 birthing centers providing pre-, neo-, and post-natal, care to birthing mothers. They are reducing the number of women dying in childbirth by more than 90%. We also inoculate the babies at birth against 11 of the most common diseases. We have begun work on 3 more birthing centers, in Mulpani, Kasteem, and Kot villages.
Exhaustible Pit Latrines
Nyeri, Kenya
The Ngungu Day Secondary School in Nyeri, Kenya, had no toilets. The 100+ girls missed a week of school every month. With our partner, Kiini Sustainable Initiative, we built a set of private, sanitary latrines. Now the girls can go to school every school day of the year. The cost? $2.50 per girl per year.
5 Preschools
Johannesburg, South Africa
This summer, a group of ODFL student travelers refurbished 5 pre-schools in the Tembisa township of Johannesburg. They immeasurably improve the conditions and the reception for the hundreds of students who will attend them over their lives. The cost is approximately $2,400 per pre-school.
Solar System at School in Manyesa
Manyesa, Malawi
We began working with our partner in Malawi, Kasimu Education Fund, in 2009. The tiny village of Manyesa had 1,200 children but no classrooms. Now they have 4 classrooms, 9 teachers, and a solar powered computer lab. The solar system was ODFL’s contribution for this year.
24 Engineered Latrines
East Bali, Indonesia
Ban is in the VERY remote mountains of East Bali, Indonesia, E.coli from human waste is killing the children under 5. We’re building 47 engineered latrines to clean up the water. They cost $250 each. That means that over their 25 year life they cost $1.66 per expected life saved per year.
Medical Clinic for Orphans
Mandalay, Myanmar
In Myanmar, a Buddhist temple has taken in 230 orphans. But there are no medical facilities. So, with MCTA: RVi Academy (a top international school in Mandalay) we are building a small medical clinic to address malnutrition, vaccinations, infections, small injuries, hygiene, and such. Its cost is $12,000 or $2.60 per child served per year.

Conservation & Reforestation

This sustainable conservation and reforestation education project will protect forest, educate local youth, build community ties and provide hands on experience for young Maya environmentalists who will teach others who are interested in conserving traditional Maya forests.
Bihukot Birthing Center
Bihukot, Nepal
Upgraded existing building into a birthing center. Bihukot is 3 hours away (driving on a really rough road) from the nearest referral center. The total catchment population for this area is 6310 and we expect to support 190 pregnancies per year.

Emergency Surgery Tents

Manuel Piquera Classroom

We constructed a new pre-school classroom in Manuel Piquera, as well as a retaining wall, play area, latrine, storage space and kitchen. This project was collaboration with the community members who contributed the majority of the labor for the project.

Upgraded existing building into a birthing center. Devisthan is located 5 hours away (walking) from the nearest referral center. The total catchment population for this area is 7633 and we expect about 220 pregnancies per year.

Rayadada, Nepal
Upgraded existing building into a birthing center. Rayadada is located 4 hours away from the nearest referral center (on foot--no roads). The total catchment population of this area is 3200 and we expect about 100 pregnancies per year.
Eliminate Project
Various Countries
Worked with Key Club International and UNICEF to help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the world by providing three vaccinations costing $1.80 to women in multiple countries.

Chhisti Birthing Center
Chhisti, Nepal
Upgraded an existing health post into a birthing center where basic emergency obstetric care can be provided to local population of 6000 with 250 pregnancies expected per year.

Hoop Gardens
Yucatan, Mexico
This project funded two hoop houses and tools to propagate and preserve at-risk native plant species. It will protect forests, educate local youth, build community ties, and provide hands-on experience for young Mayans.
Dagatumdada Birthing Center
Dagatumdada, Nepal
Three rooms have been upgraded into a birthing center next to an existing sub-health post. Dagatundada will serve a population of about 5,600 people and about 150 pregnancies per year.

Tangram Birthing Center

Upgraded four-room building into fully functional birthing center for Tangram area to serve a population of 8000 people with about 200 pregnancies per year.
Guadalupe Arriba Classroom

We built two classrooms in this low-income community of about 400 families in the Mataglpa mountains. Now all the children can go to school at the same time instead of in shifts as they had to before.

South Africa Computer Lab
Tembisa, South Africa
Provided 10 netbook computers to populate a computer lab in the Johanesberg township of Tembisa. The lab provides vocational computer-based training to hundreds of local students and job aspirants.

Water Well / Septic System

Install a septic system and water well in Chicxulub Pueblo so that the Proyecto Itzaes site would have a working bathroom. The only option before the septic was to go in the backyard.

Like Eliza Milenya two years before, we sent Alex Nasawa to the Malawi National Teacher's College to earn his teaching credential so he could teach in the school in Manyesa village.

Tepayac Nicaragua Classroom
Tepayac, Nicaragua
Built a new classroom and kitchen at school. Students had to attend school in shifts, causing a strain on families. Also, before, the school didn’t have a kitchen. The new kitchen allows mothers to safely cook fresh meals for the students.
Yucatan Library Floor

Lay a cement floor to replace deteriorated floor in Proyecto Itzaes site in Too. Too is a very small pueblo and PI is the only outside resource of school. The old floor had crumbled and the dust was not healthy for the kids and was also destroying books, didactic materials and laptops.

We installed the first-ever electrical system for the village school--a solar collection and storage system that uses panels on the school roof and batteries to power lights for two classrooms.

Girl's School Computer Lab

Build a waterproof classroom to be used as a computer and technology lab for 350 high school girls. The project was funded by donations from 32 Key Club schools in Southern California.
Dho Birthing Center
Dolpa, Nepal
Dolpa can only be reached on foot (11 days hiking). Its population is 50,000 with 1200 expected births/year. Prior to this, there were no maternal health services available. This project has made available basic obstetric care in a clean, warm, safe environment.

Sent 500 new library-grade books to the Proyecto Itazes literacy cooperative in Yucatan, Mexico. They are helping 6,500 (!) people learn to read.
Desks for SOPUDEP School

The UN called the 2010 quake "the greatest humanitarian disaster of modern times". ODFL provided funds in 2010, and this year gave more for desks at the school. It serves more than 500 students, many of them orphans, in one of the poorest districts.

Scholarship for Eliza Milenya

Sent Eliza Milenya to national teacher's college to get a teaching credential so she could teach in our school.
Montegrande Classrooms
Montegrande, Nicaragua
Finished a 2 room brick school in Montegrande, Nicaragua to replace a wooden coffee bean storage shed that had been their school.
Manikaji School Renovation
Manikaji, Indonesia
Renovated a crumbling school in the Indonesian village of Manikaji. The school serves more than 50 students. The funds were provided by students from Key Clubs at 19 high schools in Hawaii.
Laptops for Life

We sent 42 used computers to Kenya to help with the larger E-Gardens project. E-Gardens used the laptops to build an electronic bulletin-board system that now connects 11 schools in Kenya so they can share best agricultural practices.
Santa Isabel School

Built one of two new classrooms for a school that held all their classes in one wooden structure. The whole community is located on a coffee plantation.
Gakawa School Computer Lab
Gakawa, Kenya
Gakawa School is a very poor school with little access to computers. Build a weather proof computer lab so students can become computer literate and connect with the world.
2010
Hand Up for Haiti
Port-au-Prince, Haiti
With the help of 18 high schools in Silicon Valley, raised $20,000 for the SOPUDEP school in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. The school serves more than 500 students, many of them orphans.

We helped fund construction of two new classrooms for the Manyesa Village School. The village’s families hand made 160,000 bricks to help reduce the cost of the school.

San Martin School
San Martin, Nicaragua
Built a new elementary school classroom for the 150 preschool to 6th grade students. One classroom has been divided into two by a black plastic sheet to provide a separate “third classroom” space for preschool.
Kiini School Latrines
Kiini, Kenya
Build three latrines for the 151 students and staff at the Kiini secondary school. They had been using the facilities of a local church, causing conflict between the school and the church.
Mureru School Classroom
Mureru, Kenya
This school's 207 students are among the poorest in the country. Built a new classroom for 45 freshmen students who were using an earthen floor and porous timber-walled classroom.
Ngenia School Classroom
Ngenia, Kenya
Ngenia Secondary School is a day school with a population of 308 students, but no high school because of lack of space. Build a classroom to be used for high school students.
Ban School Renovation
Ban, Indonesia
Renovated Ban’s school and community-learning center. Ban’s 3,000 families lived in single-room huts with bamboo walls and dirt floors and are almost 100% illiterate.

Shoes for Malawi Kids

Collected 250 pairs of tennis shoes that were sent to the village of Manyesa in Malawi. Most of the child recipients had never had a pair of shoes in their life.
Second Harvest Food Bank

ODFL students of Los Altos High School helped raise 6,000 pounds of food for the San Jose, CA Second Harvest Food Bank food drive at Thanksgiving.
2008 China Earthquake Relief
China
Raised $3,000 to help victims of the 2008 China earthquake. The Latino Club at Mountain View High School contributed $500. All proceeds were donated to the China Red Cross.
Piglets, Not Slaves
Nepal
Bought 20 piglets to save 20 Nepalese girls from being sold into slavery. The families can raise the pigs and after a year sell them for as much as they would have gotten for selling a daughter.
Cows for Nanyuki Orphanage

Bought 2 milk cows for an orphanage in Kenya. The cows will produce milk for eight years. So, we are providing the 120 children milk every day for $2 per child per year!
Desks for Kasimu School

Bought 60 desks for the Kasimu village primary school in Malawi. The village had built a classroom but had no money left over for desks. Now they have them.
Wheels of Wonder
Kenya & Botswana
Collected and sent 452 bicycles to Africa to help students get to school. This was our hugely successful "Wheels of Wonder" bicycle donation drive carried out with Bay Area Kiwanis clubs.
Dalsinghe School Classrooms
Dalsinghe, Nepal
Built a three-room classroom in Dalsinghe, 50 kilometers west of Katmandu. It was the first school of any kind in 120 square kilometers and serves 5 villages with elementary, middle, and high school classrooms.

Naro Moru School Classroom
Nanyuki, Kenya
A new 25’ x 25’ stone classroom for the Naro Moru Mixed Day School in Nanyuki. The classroom improved the school’s ability to serve the poorest students in the district. It will last for decades.
